Learning Like Jesus Did

In grade nine, when I started following Jesus, something very surprising happened to me: As Jesus began transforming my soul, He also began transforming my school grades!

Looking back, I have wondered if my grades increased because, as a new child of God – for the first time in my life – I saw my own future potential, therefore I worked harder as a student. I have also pondered if my grades increased because I started connecting a good work ethic and subsequent improving grades to a good Christian witness. No doubt, I had some role to play in my increased grades, but I have come to recognize something else: As God began making me more like Jesus, I began learning like Jesus did.

“[Mary and Joseph] found [Jesus] in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astounded at His understanding and His answers” (Luke 2:46-47 NIV). Unfortunately, Jesus’ classroom scene is probably one of the most overlooked stories in the Gospels. Yet, it reveals one more means God uses to make us more like Jesus. Never before, or since, has there been a more engaged learner than Jesus. Think about it: Jesus, the second Person of the Godhead, learned just like you and me. Put another way: Jesus increased His knowledge and improved His skills in the classrooms of life, and we are to do the same!

In light of the fact we are all to emulate Jesus, who “grew in wisdom” (Luke 2:52), may I ask you: How’s it growing? It’s September again. Kids and youth are back in school. Many young adults are in college or university, and some mature adults have enrolled in classes to increase their knowledge and improve their skills. So, are you, like Jesus, “sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions?” or, God-forbid, are you living like you know all the answers and have nothing more to learn?
